Another learning objective in Writing 001 is rhetoric. Rhetoric is the study of words and how to persuade an audience. It is an effective form of speaking and writing.
From my perspective, my rhetoric is very different from everyone around me. For example, my second weekly response in that class. In this assignment, I had to choose and summarize a literacy narrative. The literacy narrative I chose was “Read The Fine Ink” by Brianna Bye. I had to explain why she wrote this literacy narrative. I made sure as I was writing the weekly response to not use any first-person narrative. It wasn’t my literacy narrative to summarize it was some else’s so I had to use the third-person narrative.
In another example, I had to summarize and explain from my point of view on why should we agree or disagree. The article we were given was “Should English Be The Law?” which was about if English should be a primary language in a daily business proceeding. I was able to utilize rhetoric to give me the ability to demonstrate how I should disagree or agree with English becoming a primary language. I explained that English like any other language is unique. I go on by explaining that there’s no America without its immigrants. Immigrants bring in a new tradition, a different view of life, and a beautiful language. Downsize to coming I said, immigrants had to obtain a new language to understand what was being said around them and to move forward in life. This was important because I had firsthand experience with this. I used my parent’s experiences to influence my ability to explain my point of view. Being in this Writing 001 class has given me exposure to many different types of things. It also gave me a new way to write by using templates from the book “They say, I say.” This helped me to form persuasive sentences and had improved my writing skills.
